The story begins in the coffee houses of the Ottoman Empire around the 16th century. While some say the practice of reading patterns began even earlier with tea leaves in China, it was the Turks who truly perfected the art using their unique, unfiltered coffee brew.

After a cup of strong, velvety coffee was enjoyed among friends, the remaining sludge was too intriguing to ignore. Friends began to playfully interpret the shapes left behind as gestures of goodwill or warnings. The practice became so popular that it spread across Europe and the Middle East, becoming a beloved staple of Turkish culture known as Kahve Falı. The journey begins with the Cezve (copper pot). The coffee is prepared unfiltered, specifically for you. They will see the velvety layer of foam and feel the comforting weight of the fincan (small cup). The instruction is simple: enjoy the coffee slowly, letting the grounds settle, and do not stir near the bottom.

2. Making a Wish and ‘The Flip’

Once only the sludge remains, the guest takes the saucer, places it over the cup like a lid, and makes a silent wish or holds a burning question in their mind. Then, in one fluid motion, they flip the entire apparatus upside down towards themselves. A coin or ring is sometimes placed on the base of the cooling cup to ‘seal’ the wish.

3. The Wait of Anticipation
